Individual Retirement Accounts

Individual Retirement Accounts examines the fundamentals of the many and varied types of IRA plans: traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, Coverdell Education Savings Accounts (formerly Education IRAs), simplified employee pension plans, and SIMPLE IRAs. The course explores the use and application of these plans, and explains the rules that apply to eligibility, contributions, deductions, and distributions. Examples are included throughout to illustrate these requirements. Upon course completion, the student will be able to:

  • Explain the rules governing eligibility and permitted contribution levels for traditional and Roth IRAs
  • Understand the tax treatment of contributions to and distributions from traditional and Roth IRAs
  • Cite the benefits of tax-deferred accumulation
  • Understand the rules concerning permitted IRA investments
  • Know traditional and Roth IRA distribution rules
  • Understand Coverdell Education Savings Account contribution and distribution rules and their tax implications
  • Discuss the contribution and distribution rules that apply to SEP IRAs
  • Understand the contribution and distribution rules that apply to SIMPLE IRAs
